PlayStation Plus leak reveals major change to Sony’s service, and it’s going to cost you

This Thursday, June 23, the new version of PlayStation Plus will be officially launched in France. This merger of the old PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now is offered to players in the form of three offers: Essential, Extra and Premium. And on the eve of the launch of this new version with us, a leak is likely to tarnish the morale of the regulars of PlayStation Plus gift cards.

a more renewed playstation

With this new formula, players should not be disoriented by the initial formula, which retains the current advantages of PlayStation Plus. The other two offers are more extensive, and therefore more expensive, with different bonuses. But all can benefit from the famous games offered each month by Sony. Gifts that aim to retain players, with more or less popular titles. But as the service’s FAQ section explains: “If you subscribe to both services [PS Now, PS Plus] when the new PlayStation Plus launches, you will be migrated to the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription plan and you will have a new single payment date based on the longer of your two subscriptions.”

So if a user has a PlayStation Plus subscription ending at the end of the year and a PlayStation Now subscription ending in 2025, its Premium offer will expire with the furthest subscription, namely the one that ends in 2025. Faced with this solution, many interested parties have tried the experiment by accumulating years of subscription to take advantage of an offer at a minimal price. A technique quickly blocked by Sony, which seems to have subsequent repercussions. Indeed, players wishing to extend their subscription via prepaid cards now find themselves in the water. Several Internet users have tried to hail PlayStation in search of an answer, after the purchase of a PlayStation Plus prepaid card, the use of which is now prohibited by Sony.

But in a press release then sent to IGN, Sony explains that it has temporarily deactivated the possibility of redeeming PS Plus codes purchased from online retailers. In addition, those who took out a subscription while benefiting from a discount at the time must pay the difference to obtain the upgrade without taking into account the discounts. Thus, the promotion obtained is canceled during the upgrade. Moreover, it is not possible to update for a month or a year. Players are required to upgrade for the duration of their current membership. It is not uncommon for some to commit to several years of subscription having jumped at the chance of a great discount at the time. They therefore find themselves having to pay a high price for their subscription over the duration of their commitment.

the end of savings soon?

But as the XGP.pl site discovered, Sony appears to be phasing out PlayStation Plus membership cards which can be purchased from physical or digital stores. For a long time, Sony sold PS Plus subscription cards through the PlayStation Store and physical cards. Instead of these PS Plus cards, Sony seems to be content with selling PlayStation gift cards which people can then add to their account to pay for their PlayStation Plus subscription if they wish.

At this time, it’s unclear whether Sony will end up selling those PS Plus subscription cards again, especially since with the launch of its new service, the manufacturer may be faced with confused customers. With 1 month, 3 month, 6 month or 12 month cards, for the Essential, Extra and Premium offers, the number of cards on the market could confuse subscribers. But the biggest change is likely to affect regulars in their promotions.

And for good reason, on the occasion of Black Friday, in particular, it was possible to subscribe at a lower price thanks to reductions on these cards, thanks to digital offers. But in physical stores, the discounts could be even more interesting. Thus, with the disappearance of these cards, the bill may be even higher for PlayStation Plus subscribers, especially since prices are on the rise with this new formula.
